Places to visit in Gulmarg
There are many interesting places to visit in Gulmarg where you can enjoy the natural beauty of the place to the maximum. Then again there are also some places where you can study the local population and their culture and way of life. There are also some religious places in the valley which are popular with Hindu visitors. There are also some places of religious importance to the Muslims like the Shrine of Baba Reshi. You can also see a variety of flora and fauna in the Gulmarg Biosphere reserve which is located at an altitude between 2400 and 4300 meters above sea level.
The Maharani Temple: The Maharani temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is the royal temple of the erstwhile Dogra kings of Jammu and Kashmir. It has some historical importance in this regard and is visited by many Hindu tourists visiting Gulmarg. The unique feature of the Maharani temple is that it can be seen from any part of Gulmarg. The times of aarti when the deity of the temple is worshipped twice a day is a good time to witness the elaborate ritual that is part of the daily routine of the temple.
Apharwat Peak: Apharwat peak is a beautiful summit of the Himalayan range of mountains and visited by most people who come to Gulmarg. It is located at a height of 4200 meters above sea level and receives heavy snowfall during winter. It is covered with snow for most parts of the year. The Apharwat peak is popular with skiers as the snow covered slopes are ideal for skiing. The Line of Control between India and Pakistan is barely few kilometers from here. You can reach here by cable car in the second phase of the ride from Gulmarg.
Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve: The Gulmarg Biosphere reserve is spread across an area of 180 sq. km. It is home to many rare species of flora, fauna and avifauna. This reserve is located in such a region where the biodiversity is the most varied and richest. You will find expansive patches of conifers and green herbs that lend it a scenic beauty of its own. You will find the endangered musk deer here which is the main attraction of this reserve. The other animals that you can see here include leopard, hangul, brown bear, black bear and red fox. There is also a huge population of migratory as well as indigenous birds here.
