Places to Visit In Gangtok
Inside the boundery of Gangtok, there are very few places to visit but this hill station serves as a brilliant base for tourists who wants to head for nearby destinations like Lachung, Chomgo Lake and Yumthang Valley.
Nathula Pass: Nathula Pass is located at an approximate distance of 56 kilometres from Gangtok. Nathula Pass was previously the corridor connecting India and Tibet. Trading was the main purpose served by this beautiful, snow-cladded passageway. It is located at a height of 4,310 metres above the mean sea level. On your way to Nathula Pass, you can get a magnificent view of the Tsomgo Lake. The word “Nathula” has literal meaning of “Listening Ears Pass”. The road towards Nathula Pass is flanked by thick alpine flora. The road bending down the Chumbi Valley is another delight to your eyes.
Tsomgo Lake: Once you get the scintillating view of Tsomgo Lake on your way towards, it is impossible to resist yourself from vising this place. Tsomgo Lake is one of the most visited tourist spot in Gangtok. It is just 35 kilometres away from the main town of Gangtok and takes almost one hour to reach the lake. Tsomgo Lake is believed to be a holy lake. Solitude of this place takes you away from maddening rushes of city life instantly. Here, one can literally feel the power of silence. There are many small temples surrounding this holy lake.
Yumthang Valley: Home to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, yumthang Valley is a must visit during your Gangtok trip. This is beautiful and picturesque valley bordered by snow-capped mountains. This valley is at an elevation of 3,564 metres above the mean sea level and located at the northern part of Sikkim. This place is also known as “Valley of Flowers” because of the abundance of colourful plants and flowers during spring. Distance of the Yumthang Valley from Gangtok is about 150 kilometres. Gleaming green slopes, swiftly flowing river and vibrant flowers make this valley next to heaven. At Yumthang Valley, nature has emptied its treasure for us to behold.
