Places to visit in Coorg
When sightseeing in Coorg, you will come across a number of places like the Nagarhole National Park, Namdroling Monastery, Abbey Falls, Burude and Iruppu Falls, Honnamene Kere Lake, etc. Check out the list of top three tourist places in Coorg:
Namdroling Monastery: Coorg is well-known for the Namdroling Monastery which is situated 35 kilometres from Madikeri and 6 kilometres from Kushalnagar. The monastery is well-known for its golden work articulately displayed on every painting. This is a quintessential Tibetan monastery that boasts of an 18 metre high-gold-plated Buddha. Each painting inscribed on the wall of the monastery depicts stories and significance of demons, gods and goddess, culture related to the different phases of Buddha's life. Children are offered preaching on the life and lessons of Lord Buddha outside the temple. Also, there are sacred texts, bells, trumpets, horns, prayer beads, prayer flags, drums preserved carefully inside the monastery.
Abbey Falls: The Abbey Falls swells up especially during the monsoons. Earlier, it was named the Jessy Falls, which was later changed to Abbey. When Mr. Naravanda B Nanaiah discovered the beautiful waterfall, he converted the place into spices and coffee plantations surrounding the region. There is also a hanging bridge constructed just opposite the falls. In recent times, the beauty and water of the falls have been marred owing to thick influx of tourists every year. Unaccountable amount of plastic littered in the water make it a pollution-ridden zone.
Honnamana Kere Lake: There are several lakes found in Coorg, but the Honnamana Kere Lake is the biggest one. It holds great historical and spiritual significance. The lake is named after the Goddess Honnamana and you will find its evidence in the temple situated adjacent to the lake. Around the lake, you will find man-made caves, hills and coffee plantations. What you will love most is the tranquillity and serenity surrounding the lake and the reflection of the sky falling on it. Coorg is, however, mostly popular for having a number of other lakes and falls like the Mallalli Falls, Tadiandamol Peak, Burude Falls and much more.
