Arrive Khajuraho

Welcome to your ‘Magnificent Khajuraho’ tour! On arrival at airport in Khajuraho, you will be transferred to the hotel. Khajuraho is a UNESCO world heritage site for its beautiful erotic rock carving. It is also famous for archaeological site known for its sculptured temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Jain patriarchs. In the evening, attend the Sound & light show at western group of temples. This fascinating light & sound spectacle evokes the life and times of the great Chandela Kings and traces the story of the unique temples from 10th century to the present day. The show also depicts about the construction, history and importance of the temples.

After breakfast, visit the group of temples at Khajuraho called as Western, Eastern & Southern temples. Here you can experience & study the World Heritage Site. Western Group of Temples are the most popular with beautiful massive structures from which Kandariya Mahadeo is considered the most evolved example of central Indian temple architecture. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is also the largest of Khajuraho temples.

There are other temples namely:

  • Lakshmana Temple: - It is one of the oldest and finest of the western group of temples.
  • Vishvanath and Nandi Temple: - The temple of Vishvanath and Nandi celebrates the marriage of Lord Shiva with Parvati.
  • Chaunsat Yogini: - It is the oldest of the surviving temples of Khajuraho India. This temple is dedicated to goddesses Kali.

Post lunch; proceed to the Eastern group of temples. The temple of Parsvanath is the largest of the Jain temples in Khajuraho. The temple was originally dedicated to Adinath and later to Parsvanath. It is the finest example of the sensitive art without any sexual motifs. Near this, you will find the temple of Adinath with fine carvings. The temple is quite similar to the Hindu temples of Khajuraho. Later, proceed to Southern group of temples which consists of Duladeo temple and Chaturbhuj temple. Duladeo temple is the most popular temple in the southern group of temples in Khajuraho. Chaturbhuj temple is dedicated to Vishnu in his ascetic form. It is the only temple in Khajuraho devoid of any erotic carvings.

After breakfast, visit the Archaeological Museum. There are five galleries in the museum; some are as - Main Hall and Veradah display, Jaina Gallery, Vaisnava Gallery, Miscellaneous Gallery, and Saiva Gallery. In 1910, W.A. Jardine, an innovative local officer of the British government collected the loose sculptures and architectural members of the ruined temples of Khajuraho and preserved it in an enclosure built adjoining to the Matangeshwar Temple. Till 1952, this collection was known as Jardine Museum and then it was taken over by the Archaeological Survey of India. Then, proceed to the Old village. There are some very interesting old buildings within the narrow alleys, quite a few of which have excellent tiled roofs. Later, proceed to Jatkara village. From Jatkara Village, commence the heritage walk upto Beejamandal temple where you can survey the latest excavation ruins of huge Beejamandal temple was brought to light in the year 2000. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and an exquisite image of Sarasvati was also found from here. It has revealed the remains of a huge temple base datable to 11th century A.D. In the evening, visit Kandariya Shilpgram for witnessing the local artisans at work, handcraft and gift store and an entertainment venue which offers a cultural program very similar to the one held at the Shilpgram.

SEE -  

  • Pandav Falls: - It is a breathtaking waterfall the step gorge in the hillside brings water from the hilltop cascading down to a great pool below. The waterfall gets its name from a local legend that in times gone by the five exiled Pandav brothers of the epic poem Mahabharata visited this region.
  • Panna national park: - It is a very popular wild life reserve. It is located 57 km from Khajuraho. The park is famous for its big cats like the tigers and the leopards.
  • Raneh Waterfall: - This beautiful water fall is situated on the Ken River, and comes in under Chhatarpur district in Madhya Pradesh. This is about 30 meters deep canyon formed with pure crystalline granite in different colors like pink, green, misty white, and red to grey.
  • Orchha: - It was the erstwhile capital city of the redoubtable Bundela kings. 16th and 17th century palaces and temples make Orchha, a famous tourist destination in Madhya Pradesh.
