First Ever Luxury Train To Travel Across India 9th, September 2006
New Delhi: The first ever luxury train to run across the subcontinent of India left Mumbai on Tuesday (5 September, 06) on a 14 day trip that will take passengers from around the world on a journey of a lifetime. 'The Viceroy of India' is being run by the British Company, GW Travel, who are already running luxury trains in Russia and China.
Tim Littler, Managing Director, GW Travel said "there have been luxury trains in India before but never one that has run right across the country. This is the inaugural trip, but interest in the journey from potential passengers from around the world has been so great that the initial journeys for the next year have already sold out and we are negotiating more."
'The Darjeeling Mail' takes passengers which this time includes British travel journalists from Mumbai to Jaipur, Agra, Delhi, Varanasi and finally allows passengers to travel on the Toy Train to Darjeeling.
Tim Littler added "GW Travel has been offering luxury travel around the world for more than a decade and we have always wanted to showcase India. We have had tremendous support from the Indian Railway Board and Maharashtra Tourism & Development Cooperation who have allowed us to charter their train Deccan Odyssey. We have partnered with Cox & Kings who are providing their ground handling services for passengers and the Taj Hotel Group who are providing all onboard services, including F&B, and have one of their top Chefs on board."
According to Arup Sen, Executive Director, Cox & Kings, "We are delighted to be a part of this initiative, which for the first time showcases the colours of India."
Next year GW Travel will run six trains between Mumbai and Kolkata and vice versa. The Company is already looking at new routes to satisfy a growing interest in India from people who wish to travel by train.
