Places to Visit in Switzerland
Switzerland is a small country but in spite of this the tourism industry is booming here. Among the most popular places which tourists flock to are the majestic Alps and glaciers. Then there are ancient castles, clear blue lakes, and breathtaking mountain peaks in all directions. The best part is that the crime rate in this country is low and this is why tourists from all over the world throng to this country. Apart from this there is a plethora of places to visit for people with all kinds of tastes and preferences. The Swiss countryside, mountains and lakes are beautiful in any season and they provide a lot of opportunity for outdoor activities throughout the year.
Matterhorn, Zermatt: This is a pyramid shaped giant and is by far the most photographed mountain in the world. This also makes it the most famous Alpine peak in Switzerland and hence the top place to visit in the country. The height of the Matterhorn in Zermatt stands at 4478 meters and mountaineers from all over the world come here to conquer it. There are cable cars zipping through the mountain station in Zermatt and this is the highest cable car station in the Alps. These cars take skiers and snowboarders to the surrounding mountains during the winter and hikers during the summer.
Chateau de Chillon, Montreux: This Chateau is located in the heart of the Swiss Riviera and on the banks of the lake Geneva. IT is a four century old water fortress which was the seat of the rich counts of Savoy. Here there is a lot to enjoy from leisurely strolls by the lakeside, or taking a parade through its ancient halls where you can enjoy 14th century paintings, subterranean vaults, towers, weaponry, bedrooms and furniture. The Chateau and its belongings are well preserved in their original form. This Chateau consists of 25 buildings and three courtyards and can be accessed by foot, bus or boat from the town of Montreux.
The Jungfrau region: The Junfraujoch is a wonderland in the Alps and has a lot to offer the adventure seekers or those who are looking for a quiet retreat. There are the big three – the glacial monoliths Monch, Jugfrau and Eiger. There are the rolling green meadows below them and winding mountain paths which make for enchanting views that embody the best of Switzerland tourism. In the midst there is the charming town of Interlaken which is rustic and is a popular starting point for travellers in this region. From here you can visit the highlights of this region like the towns of Murren, Grindelwald, Wengen and LAuterbrunnen.
